Disposal jammed, leaking or smoking? Cut the power first
A disposal that hums and stalls, or one that is spraying water into the cabinet, can be fixed any hour, and our dispatch line is open 24/7 in Dania Beach. Flip the wall switch to off first. Then switch off the breaker that feeds the sink circuit, because a switch alone does not protect your hand.
Never put your hand into a disposal, even when it is off. The blades are not sharp knives, but the flywheel can still turn and pin fingers. Use tongs or pliers to lift out anything visible, and only after the power is off at the breaker.
If you smell burning or see smoke from the unit, leave it off and stay clear. If water is running in the cabinet, close the two stops under the sink and stop the dishwasher.
What to check first, and what to shut off
Many service calls end with a tripped overload, not a dead motor. The checks below take about five minutes and are safe with the power off.
- Confirm the wall switch and the breaker are on. Some disposals plug into an outlet under the sink, so look there as well.
- Look under the disposal for a small red reset button on the bottom. If it has popped out, push it in once the motor has cooled for a few minutes.
- Find the hex socket in the center of the bottom plate. A 1/4-inch Allen wrench turned back and forth frees most jams.
- Remove anything you can see from above with tongs, never fingers.
- Run cold water, restore power and switch the disposal on for a few seconds.
- If it hums but will not turn, or the reset trips again right away, stop and call.
It hums and nothing spins
A humming disposal means the motor has power but the flywheel is locked. The usual causes are a spoon, a bottle cap, a chicken bone or a stack of fibrous peels wedged against the grinding ring. Loosening the jam with the Allen wrench works when the obstruction is small.
If the wrench turns but the unit still stalls, the motor bearings or the capacitor may be worn. We cannot tell you which by phone, and at that point replacing the disposal often costs about as much as repairing it.
Water under the sink: top, side or bottom?
Where the water appears tells us what failed. Dry the cabinet, run the faucet, then run the disposal and look at each joint with a flashlight.
| Where it leaks | Likely cause | Can it be repaired? |
|---|---|---|
| Around the sink flange at the top | Dried putty or a worn gasket and mounting ring | Yes, reseat the flange with new putty or gasket |
| Dishwasher hose connection on the side | Loose hose clamp or cracked inlet | Yes, replace the hose and clamp |
| Discharge pipe at the side outlet | Failed gasket or loose elbow bolts | Yes, replace the gasket |
| Through the body or from the bottom | Cracked housing or corroded seal | No, replace the disposal |
The dishwasher drains into the sink instead
The dishwasher drain hose usually connects to a small inlet on the side of the disposal. On a brand-new unit, that inlet is blocked by a plastic knockout plug that must be punched out first. If it is left in place, the dishwasher cannot drain and dirty water backs up into the sink.
Hose routing matters too. The hose should rise to the underside of the countertop before it drops to the inlet, called a high loop, or pass through an air gap. This keeps sink water from running backward into the dishwasher. We check the loop on every disposal install.
What should never go down a disposal
A disposal is not a garbage can, and the kitchen line downstream pays for the habits upstream. Grease and oil cool in the trap and the branch line, where they narrow the pipe over time.
- Cooking grease, fat and oil
- Fibrous stalks and husks such as celery strings, corn husks and artichoke leaves
- Large bones, fruit pits and shells
- Rice and pasta in bulk, since they swell
- Anything that is not food, including twist ties and produce stickers
Repair it or replace the disposal
A disposal that is leaking from the body is finished, and a unit that trips its reset every day is close. Jams, loose clamps, bad gaskets and failed putty seals are repairs. Replacement sizes run in horsepower steps, commonly 1/3, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 horsepower, and a bigger motor handles more volume without bogging down.
| Symptom | Repair | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Jam, hum, tripped reset | Yes, free the flywheel | Only if it keeps jamming |
| Leak at the flange or hose | Yes | No |
| Leak through the housing | No | Yes |
| Motor dead, no hum, reset ok | Unlikely | Usually yes |
| Rust or burn smell | No | Yes |
Installing a new disposal in Dania Beach
A new install covers removing the old unit, cleaning the sink flange, mounting the new unit on its ring, connecting the discharge pipe and the dishwasher inlet, and testing for leaks with the water running. If you are adding a disposal where none existed, the sink and the outlet decide how much work it is.
Electrical supply is a separate trade. Tell us what you have under the sink, an outlet or hardwired cable, and we will say whether the plumbing side can go ahead. The same visit can include a faucet or a stop valve through faucet repair or plumbing installation. Owners in West Park and nearby areas get the same install steps.
Slow kitchen sink or gurgling after the disposal runs
If the sink drains slowly with the disposal running, the clog may be in the kitchen branch line after the trap and not in the unit. Water that backs up into the second sink basin points the same way. Our drain cleaning crews clear that line with a cable machine and can inspect it with a camera if it returns.
Dania Beach housing includes older buildings, with a median build year of 1977 per the American Community Survey. Older kitchen branches may run through long horizontal stretches that grease settles in.
Disposal repair and installation: what guides publish
National published guides put garbage disposal installation at about $200 to $625, and Florida prices vary. Forbes lists a wider band of $150 to $950 depending on the unit and the job. Repairs such as a gasket, putty seal or clearing a jam fall below a full install.
The unit you choose changes the number more than the labor.
What moves the price
- Motor size. A 1/3 horsepower unit is priced very differently from a 3/4 or 1 horsepower model.
- Mounting hardware. Older sinks may need a new mounting ring or flange to fit a new unit.
- Electrical setup. Missing outlets or switches add a second trade.
- Dishwasher hookup. A knockout plug, new hose or air gap fitting adds parts and time.
- Night or weekend call. Ask on the call whether nights, weekends or holidays are priced differently.

A disposal that fails and floods a cabinet is often treated as sudden and accidental water damage. A seep that has rotted the cabinet floor over months may be argued as gradual damage, and policies differ. Take photos and ask your insurer before you tear anything out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you handle garbage disposal repair emergencies at night or on weekends in Dania?
Yes. Dispatch runs 24/7, including weekends and holidays. A disposal spraying water or smoking gets treated as urgent. We cannot promise an arrival time by phone, but we will tell you which valves and breakers to switch off. Call (954) 697-4920 and describe what you see.
Is it safe to reach in and pull something out?
No. Switch off the breaker first, and use tongs or pliers instead of fingers. The flywheel can still turn if the motor kicks on or the power is not fully off.
Why does my disposal hum but not spin?
The flywheel is locked, usually by a hard object or a pack of fibrous scraps. Turn off power, use a 1/4-inch Allen wrench in the center socket underneath, and press the red reset. If the hum returns, the motor may be failing.
The dishwasher stopped draining after a new disposal went in. Why?
The knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet was probably left in place. The plug has to be punched out before the dishwasher hose can drain into the unit. We check this on every install.
I manage rental units in Dania Beach. Can you handle a disposal in each one?
Yes. Just under half of occupied Dania Beach homes are owner-occupied (46.8 percent), so many disposals are in rentals. Tell us the unit numbers and who approves the cost, and we will group the visits.
Can a disposal be repaired if it leaks from the bottom?
Not reliably. Leaks through the housing or the bottom seal mean the casing is corroded or cracked. Replacement is the sound answer, and we will confirm the damage before you buy a new unit.
